pool party pooper

"Just push down till you see me wave". Right, got it. I gripped the sponge mop and plunged it down as she opened her eyes wide and took a deep breathe before sinking into the slimy water. As I tried to keep the sponge positioned comfortably on her back I wondered why people open their eyes like that right before going under water.

Wait, was that a wave? Attempt number two for patching the pool liner was under way and we were on the last patch with the pool store closing in minutes. "Please, work. Please." I prayed.

The hole (small slit, technically, lets emphasis the small- thank you) in the pool liner was my fault. The pool being cloudy, slimy and green was my fault too. I had been trying to remedy some of the dirtiness problem by wiping down the sides of the pool earlier in the day with the sponge mop. This had not been done in awhile and is unnecessary if the chemicals are kept in proper balance. The pool at work is above ground and used for therapeutic purposes. The edge of the pool is a four inch board and when I stand on it to reach down into the pool with my mop I have to couch down to avoid head contact with the ceiling.
I was feeling very industrious by the time I finished mopping the walls of the pool. Full of confidence that I would get the pool looking better before the next pool therapy day I breathed a sigh closed the door to the pool room returning to the regularly scheduled programming.

I actually had a very interesting patient interaction during this time that I will expound on later. But back to the pool story- after approximately twenty minutes I went into the office to find that there was a widening arc of wetness coming from beneath the wall. The wall next to the pool. In an instant I knew what had happened and alerted my boss. She was walking into the office behind me and I think my exact word were, "OH! The floor is wet. Oh, the pool!"

Anyways, to cut through all the drama- the rest of my afternoon was spent plunging my coworker to the bottom of the pool so she could patch the leak with two hands and cleaning up the mess of water in the both rooms. Today I finally got to put the bookcase and desks back in order and the pool is looking much better. It was not the first time and the pool has had problems and I take some comfort in the story of a previous employee that turned the water on to add some water to the pool and then went home for the day leaving the water on. The flooding was a little more severe that time.
Though I don't think I will be mopping walls again anytime soon.

haha! Maybe if we all swapped work stories, we might see how adventurous our jobs really are. i mean really, i've never pushed a co-worker to the bottom of a pool with a mop--and gotten paid for it! :)

Call me crass, but I was waiting for the poop to enter your story. This could have been much worse, when you think about it.

Oh my, your job really does get crazy sometimes. I remember you telling me about the ginormus ant colony living... under the pool was it? Anyway, it sounds like you have crazy adventures with that pool. I love how you ask why people widen their eyes before closing them to go under. I do it too, but yeah, why?
