This week sister and I were lamenting about cooking. Actually, I was lamenting and she was cooking but thats not the point. The conversation was that its not easy to cook for your own daily nourishment. Cooking for others is a better motivator and making something out of inspiration is much more fun than lunches for work.

Anyways, I resolved to eat lettuce with my daily can of black beans and to actually experiment with an untested recipe. The welcome home dinner this weekend was a perfect opportunity for my red basil lemonade. It had taken longer than planned for the basil to get big enough to trim back but it was finally ready. Finally!

I set out eagerly with the lemon squeezing and sugar syrup making. The recipe said to use a mortar and pestle to crush the basil but that a blender would suffice. I don't know what went wrong but as strained the crushed leaves from the lemonade I was disgusted to see that it was brownish green and gross looking. Did I plant the wrong kind of basil? Did I really need a mortar and pestle to get the proper color? But they said I could use a blender! The picture said it was going to be a lovely shade of red/purple magic. The beauty of the picture was the only reason I wanted to make it. Discouraged, I added some of the basil leaves to the pitcher but it only made it look more swampy. I didn't even want to taste it. I waited so long and it wasn't even going to work. Yuck.

After some tasting and tinkering the brown lemonade actually tasted pretty good. The basil flavor was light and the overall effect was very refreshing. It wasn't what I thought it would be. It was much better. Guess who learned their lesson, again.

Teach me to do your will,
for you are my God; may your good spirit
lead me on level ground.
Psalm 143:10

If it had been purple, it wouldn't have matched the rest of our meal! I love it when expectations are shattered by something great.

Sister, maybe we should cook each other's food on our days off so that we will be more motivated to cook/eat. maybe. (?)
